I have been wanting to discuss how to grow your Domain Authority ranking since last July. I came to understand domain authority at the beginning of July and was excited to see my score for the first time. Building domain authority isn’t going to happen overnight, the same as when you make money blogging. In fact, it can take months even years.
Most bloggers or website owners have the goal of getting to the #1 page of the search engine results page. That spot can increase your click-through rates by as much as 200 percent!
And here is the good news! When I publish this post, one of my articles is up there on the #1 page of Google search!

What is Domain Authority?
First thing first. You have to know what is Domain Authority (DA). DA is a score between 1-100 that predicts how well your site will rank on search engines, e.g. Google. When you have a strong domain authority score, this will allow your work to rank higher on SERPs.
Domain Authority is calculated by evaluating multiple factors, including linking root domains and the number of total links, into a single DA score. This score can then be used when comparing websites or tracking the “ranking strength” of a website over time. Domain Authority is not a metric used by Google in determining search rankings and has no effect on the SERPs.Moz
Actually, domain authority ranking isn’t a ranking factor used by search engines, but it includes elements that take part in how websites and pages rank in search engines. After all, Moz considers only about 40 factors while the almighty Google takes into account plenty more. For instance, backlinks from the right domains can help your blog content rank higher on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
In calculating a site’s domain authority, a number of factors are weighed. Factors such as the total number of inbound links, the number of root domains linking to the website, the authority of the linking domains, how many other unique domains those sites link to, and much more.
Therefore, a low domain authority ranking shouldn’t depress you. In fact, knowing that you can grow your domain authority ranking is good news.
Why is Domain Authority Ranking Important?
As human beings, we’re obsessed with percentages, stats, and comparing numbers! Because I am!
The algorithms utilized by Google in determining how well a site will rank on its result pages are some of the best-kept secrets of the 21st century. Domain authority is a welcomed development because it gives a fair understanding of how Google and other search engines rank sites.
You will have higher traffic numbers and conversion rates if you have a high domain authority ranking because you’re doing SEO the right way. With domain authority, you can get a trusted representation of the search result terrain. This gives you an insight into why a site will rank higher than another on search engine result pages.

Anything in the SEO world, including DA, is a long-term metric that takes time and effort to affect. Your score can fluctuate based on the factors Moz uses to score your DA, meaning it can go up or down relative to the DA of the highest authority website.
Moz also designed DA to be logarithmic, which means that when your score is high, it’s hard to improve it. It’s easy to go from 20 to 30, but significantly harder to go from 80-90.
How To Check Domain Authority Ranking?
Checking your site’s domain authority ranking can be done effortlessly. In my opinion, domain authority is not something you should obsess over. However, it doesn’t hurt to take a peek once in a while – I do check it once a month!
To check your domain authority, visit Moz. Then you enter the URL of the site you want to check. If you already have an account with Moz and are logged in, the domain authority ranking will show up instantly. But, if you don’t have an account with Moz, it will prompt you to create one.
You don’t have to regularly check your domain authority ranking every week and Moz allows you to check your DA for free 10 times a month.
How to Build and Increase Domain Authority Ranking?
Work On Your Off-Page SEO
Off-page SEO refers to activities that take place outside your website. Think of it in terms of external tactics geared towards effectively marketing your site and reaching a wider audience. For example, if you write a guest post or leave a comment on someone’s blog, you’re doing off-page site promotion.
Backlinks are integral to off-page SEO, a single quality backlink from an authoritative site is worth more than 10 or even 100 low-quality links.
Some tips to work on your off-page SEO:
- Build High-Quality Backlinks: Backlinks are one of the most important elements that influence domain authority. This is because of the way Google and other search engines rank content. Google wants to provide its users with the best content for their searches, this means content that solves and answers their questions. Therefore, content is ultimately what powers all DA.
To get more backlinks, you can use an analytics tool to find your top referring websites. Research similar ones to your top referrers and get backlinks to them through shares, roundup posts, or guest blogging on their site.
- Dofollow vs Nofollow link. Google doesn’t transfer PageRank across nofollowed links, so prioritize building followed (“dofollow”) links. Most links on the web are followed, but some websites have almost all outbound links. So, if you’re actively building or pursuing links from a particular website, it pays to make sure that their outbound links are followed. To do this, you can install the nofollow Chrome extension, which highlights nofollow links on the page.
- Anchor text: Anchor text refers to the clickable words used to link one web page to another. In other words, it’s likely that backlinks with anchor text relating to the overall topic of your web page have some influence on rankings.
But even if you did have control over the anchor text of external inbound links, it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. Penguin—which is now part of Google’s core algorithm—penalizes sites that attempt to manipulate rankings by building links with keyword-rich anchors. Luckily, most people naturally link in natural and relevant ways.
Work On Your On-Page SEO
On-page SEO refers to optimization activities that are carried out on the pages of a website. They are easy and can be implemented in an instant, quite unlike their off-page. Some tips to work on your on-page SEO:
- Site’s URL structure: It should be arranged in a manner that displays the category hierarchy of the site. It also matters because if it contains keywords (it should contain keywords), users will easily link with the keyword.
- Title tags. Title tags specify the title of a website page. It is easy not to think much about them. But they play the role of attracting users to click on your site when it shows up on a search engine result page.
- Also, the content of a page on your site and help with SEO. You should make them attractive enough to capture your users’ attention, or else you might lose that click. There is always a tendency for users to get distracted and lose track of your content. In that case, a good title tag serves as a placeholder and reminds them of the page’s content in the event that a user has multiple tabs open.
- In fact, many think that SEO is just all about keywords. It isn’t, but keywords are important if you are concerned about growing your domain authority and boosting your site’s visibility. Keywords should be smoothly added to a page’s content so that it flows naturally. Therefore, keywords should be cleverly spread throughout the text, and even included in the image alt texts.
Work On Your Technical SEO
One of the factors Moz uses to calculate your domain authority ranking is your site structure. The simpler it is, the faster Google can index it and include it in SERPs. A sitemap is a sort of roadmap for your website, helping search engines index the most important pages quickly.
The second part of your site structure that affects your domain authority ranking is how easy it is for people to use. And since many people are accessing the Internet via their mobile devices, it makes sense to optimize your site for mobile. Check that it functions properly on mobile devices, that it loads quickly, and provides the same experience as a desktop user.

Technical SEO is aimed at optimizing the workings of the complete website for the sake of search engine crawling, indexing, and general visibility.
As the name implies, a measure of technical knowledge is required. However, the good news is that for the most part, once you get your technical SEO on lock, you won’t have to do it again.
- Security is one core facet of technical SEO. You should add SSL (Secure Socket Layer) to your site to make it HTTPS. This means that your site can only be accessed with https and not http.

Increase Your Site Speed
According to an infographic by Kissmetrics, 40% of people say that they will leave a site page that takes 3 seconds or more to load. Here are some tips to make your website faster:
- Compress your images because large images make your page slow. I use tinyjpg.com to compress the images that upload to my blog.
- Enable browser caching. With this, a user will store parts of your site in their browser, and this will help your site load faster upon subsequent visits.
- Keep track of your site speed. You can do this by utilizing tools such as Google Page Insights, Google Mobile Speed Tools and others. They give tips and recommendations after an analysis.
Write Long-Form Quality Content
The truth is, anyone can create long-form content, but what really matters is the quality of the content. This is not a new idea, but it’s still valid – if implemented correctly.
How long should your content be? Based on a study produced by Buzzsumo and OkDork, content with over 1500 words received over 5000 shares on social media. It is because it was viewed as a resource for readers looking for useful information.
You can create articles, guides, infographics, presentations, and more. But if you want to boost your domain authority ranking, you’ll need to look at the most popular pages on your website. This way, you can create similar content types and talk about related topics, ensuring it’ll get shared more online and earn you more backlinks.
It’s not enough to simply write long content and wait for people to link to them. You need to be more active to get the links you need. The simplest way to use blog posts for link generation is still guest posting.
Conduct A Link Audit
Search engines, like Google, prefer domains with a lot of links to a lot of sites especially if the links are from authoritative websites. You will need to make sure your backlinks are high-quality because Google will reward your site if you have lots of good ones and will penalize if you have a lot of bad ones.
That means you have to do a link audit. One of my favorite ways to do a link audit is to use an SEO tool like Ubersuggest and type in your domain. It will go through all your backlinks and give you a lot of information about them.
Take a look at your information and focus on fixing all the problems given from it. They say prevention is better than cure. It is best to conduct a link audit sooner than later because bad links incur penalties.
To effectively grow your domain authority ranking, you must avoid bad links like:
- A link from sites that activate a virus warning when you enter their URLs.
- A link from spam sites.
- Links from sites with odd content and sites that promote social vices.
However, I must point out that a bad link and a low-quality link are not entirely the same thing. In fact, you should allow some links to stay, even if they seem to have low quality.

Build Internal Link
Internal links are a good SEO signal to search engines and an excellent way to boost your domain authority ranking. Why? Because you keep people on your website for longer as they move from link to link and page to page. They also make it easier for search engines to index your site because they can see which pages are important to you.
One thing to remember is that you don’t ultimately control your website’s domain authority directly. Your score is calculated from a variety of factors that you have to put into place and do well, so your domain authority ranking increases steadily. Improving your domain authority ranking should be a long-term strategy for your website.
If your site is new and you want to get quicker indexing by Google, frequent publishing of content is another way to grow your domain authority ranking. I recommend at least creating or publishing one post in a week.
It might not seem like much, but if you stick to your schedule and watch how far you will go in months. Slow but steady, right?
As much as we all would like to have our domain authority ranking touching the skies overnight, the truth might burst your bubble!
A site’s domain authority ranking might be anything, but it is not a magic beanstalk.
An increase in domain authority ranking is a product of strategic moves made over a significant period of time. I daresay that any site with a domain authority of at least 50 has been up and running for a number of years, and has oodles of good content.

Therefore, instead of lying awake in your bed all night, expecting a growth spurt in your domain authority ranking, rest easy, my fellow bloggers. Do all that I have discussed above and let time pass. Because time will pass, regardless.
